Toei Animation just dropped their financial result summary for 2023-2024, revealing that Dragon Ball Daima has just beaten One Piece in overall sales. This comes as a shock for most One Piece fans since Dragon Ball hasn’t had a continuous run since Dragon Ball Super. Yes the Movies count but for the overall series, One Piece has had it in the park for quite a while. From the Egghead Arc to The Fishman-Island Remaster, you would surely think that One Piece would take the win, but that is not the case.

The overall sales accounting for Domestic Licensing, Overseas Films, Overseas Licensing and Streaming Licenses, show clearly that the Dragon Ball franchise has made a come back. Dragon Ball generated an estimated 12.7 Billion Yen( 123$ Million), while One Piece brought in a total of 11.3 Billion Yen( 119$ Million). The gap is not that big considering it’s a 4$ Million gap but that’s beside the point. The fact is that Dragon Ball, without using their biggest Ip( Dragon Ball Super), surpassed One Piece. But an argument can be made here.

One Piece fans bring up the fact that the Anime went on Hiatus, being replaced by the Fishman Island Remaster which greatly hindered its performance. If the anime aired as normal, weekly, it would have definitely outperformed Dragon Ball. This is a valid reason but the other side may differ, since Dragon Ball is Technically on Hiatus too. The Dragon Ball Super anime went on hiatus on the 25th of March, 2018. It has been 7 Years since the anime stopped airing not including the two Super movies. People have been waiting this long for an anime adaptation of the manga, but were surprised to get an anime original story with the announcement of Dragon Ball Daima.

The fact that Dragon Ball did not continue Super after all this time, introduced a whole new story with Daima, and still outperformed One Piece in sales is crazy work. Dragon Ball Daima is finally in is final Quarter of its anime and One Piece will be returning this April so this year’s results may be different. The second half of the Egghead Arc will finally come on screen with good pacing and mind blowing animation, while Daima has about a month still left of Airing. This is not to say that One Piece will reign supreme because we don’t know the future of Dragon Ball. All we know is that the Dragon Ball Super Manga will be returning soon and that’s it. It looks like 2025 will be a toss up on who will reign supreme at the start of next year, when the results turn in again.
